Main topics of Research:
a. Genetic susceptibility to type 1 diabetes:
Prof. Buzzetti’s research related to genetic susceptibility to type 1 diabetes have made significant contributions essentially through two paths a) the identification of new susceptibility genes, b) the evaluation of genetic determinants associated with the disease in the Italian population, resulting in the formulation of the risk and implementation of predictive clinical trials. One of the most significant results was the identification of a "new" susceptibility gene to type 1 diabetes, the CTLA-4 (Cytotoxic T-limphocyte Associated-4). To date, this gene represents, among all the genes studied, one of the three definitely associated with this disease in all populations.
b. Identification of metabolic markers of cardiovascular diseases in overweight/obese children and adolescent:
One of the most relevant result in this topic is the discover of a clinical marker of insulin resistance in overweight/obese children and adolescent, the wrist circumference, also related to cardiovascular risk. This finding has been confirmed in several studies afterwards.
c. Genetic, immunological, metabolic characterization of Latent Autoimmune Diabetes in Adults with the relative implications on therapy
Prof Buzzetti is the PI of of the Italian NIRAD project (Non Insulin Requiring Autoimmune Diabetes) aimed at the characterization of LADA (latent Autoimmune Diabetes in Adults), this multicentric study has led to the recruitment of about 6000 patients in 83 centers distributed throughout the national territory. The results obtained, on one hand have allowed the epidemiological, genetic and phenotypic characterization of this form of diabetes in Italy throughout the national territory, on the other hand, significantly, contributed to the advancement of knowledge in this form of diabetes.
