Dr Matthew Campbell | PhD ACSM CEP FHEA BSc (Hons)
Matthew holds a tenured position as a Principle Investigator in Nutrition and Metabolism within the School of Food Science and Nutrition at the University of Leeds. He obtained his PhD from the University of Northumbria and stayed on to complete a post-doctoral fellowship investigating nutritional and insulin-dose adjustment strategies to improve post-exercise and postprandial glycaemic control in type 1 and type 2 diabetes.
Matthew’s work has developed effective self-management strategies for the avoidance of exercise-induced hypoglycaemia and late post-prandial hyperglycaemia which informed the landmark Exercise Management in Type 1 Diabetes Consensus Statement, and the American Diabetes Association Position Statement for Physical Activity and Exercise.
Today, Matthew’s research group takes a multidisciplinary approach to understanding the role of nutrition and exercise in the prevention and management of metabolic disease from the molecular to the whole-body to the population level. He leads a number of research programmes covering two interlinked areas, cardiometabolic health and postprandial handling in response to diet and exercise. He is investigating which factors influence the cardiometabolic impact of food, and the food matrix, and how modulating the composition of food can optimize targeted nutritional strategies to improve the management of diabetes.
Matthew’s research has been generously supported by the NIHR, BHF, Diabetes UK, Nutricia Research Foundation, LiverNorth, in addition to industry sponsorship for investigator-led research including Bristol-Myers Squibb and AbbVie. Matthew has published his work regularly and consistently in world-leading journals including Diabetes Care, the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition and the Journal of the American Heart Association. He has won a number of notable awards for his work, has been featured on TV and radio, and speaks regularly at international meetings.
